Another form of carbon emission offset is focused on the transition of fossil energy sources like oil and coal to renewable sources like solar and wind, the energy transition. Carbon offset projects in this area are projects focusing on preventing future emission by investing in implementation of renewable energy sources.  

This can be done at large scale (solar park or wind farms) or small scale (solar cooking stoves). As with forestation there are similar challenges with these projects to make sure that they are additional. Another challenge is carbon accounting with these projects to determine the actual carbon emission savings they realize withing a certain timeframe.
