Energy Transitions

Another form of carbon emission offset is focused on the transition of fossil energy sources like oil and coal to renewable sources like solar and wind, the energy transition. Carbon offset projects in this area are projects focusing on preventing future emission by investing in implementation of renewable energy sources.

This can be done at large scale (solar park or wind farms) or small scale (solar cooking stoves). As with forestation there are similar challenges with these projects to make sure that they are additional. Another challenge is carbon accounting with these projects to determine the actual carbon emission savings they realize withing a certain timeframe

One of the main benefits of this type of carbon offset investment is that they often create social (e.g., better/healthier living conditions) or economic (new jobs) opportunities for (low-income) communities where these projects are realized. In addition, if set up in a proper and fair way the energy transition projects will generate local income from carbon credits, they generate that can be sold for carbon offset purposes.
